⚠️ CRITICAL WARNING – READ BEFORE BUILDING

Modifying an iPod involves lithium batteries, sharp tools, and delicate electronics. Improper assembly, short circuits, reversed connectors, or damaged cables can permanently damage components or create a safety hazard.

Boxy Pixel is not responsible for damage caused during installation. Proceed only if you are comfortable working with small electronics.

  • Verify battery connector orientation
  • Test battery directly on the iPod motherboard
  • If it powers on, the battery is confirmed good

Boxy Pixel PCB Test

  • Connect PCB flex to iPod motherboard
  • Do NOT connect battery
  • Plug in USB-C

Both red and green LEDs should illuminate. If neither lights, the Type-C board is likely defective.

The board may feel warm during charging. It should never become hot.

Battery Not Holding a Charge

  1. Charge overnight
  2. Fully deplete
  3. Charge overnight again

Charging Appears Not to Work

The Boxy Pixel daughterboard does not report charging status to the iPod. Charging is indicated by the red LED on the PCB (visible from the back).

This is almost always a connection or strain issue.

  • Check HDD / iFlash ribbon orientation
  • Reseat all flex cables
  • Reduce strain on the storage connector

Installing the battery at the back of the iPod (not between boards) often resolves this issue.

If unresolved, revert to a stock configuration to isolate the fault.

Click Wheel Not Working (6th / 7th Gen)

  1. Obtain one Gen 5 click wheel and one Gen 6/7 click wheel
  2. Carefully peel electronics from both
  3. Attach Gen 6/7 electronics to Gen 5 plastic

All Bluetooth hardware is tested and functional. Bluetooth performance varies by headphones and speakers.

Poor Range / Static / One-Sided Audio

Some Bluetooth devices do not maintain stable connections. Try different headphones first.

External Antenna (Advanced)

  • Frequency: 2.4–2.5 GHz
  • Impedance: 50 Ω
  • Connector: U.FL / IPEX
  • Gain: 2–5 dBi

Internal antenna traces on the bluetooth board must be cut before installing an external antenna. One customer installed this with sucess: CORONIR IPX Built-in 2.4GHz Antenna,Internal Antenna Built-in PCB Antenna Patch for WiFi Router, Monitor, Bluetooth Speaker Headphone Module IPEX1
